Fuel Storage
In order to be secure, the smaller fuel canisters or the large refueling tank needs to be stored away from the main building or complex. Adding to the safety aspect, it is required that "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed in the vicinity. Ideally, the fuel tanks must be stored in a safe enclosure that can just be accessible by authorized employees. It is important for the operator's safety, as well as everybody they work with, that these safety regulations are strictly followed.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected. This task can use retraining systems like concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods can be used. It is also vital to always have a fire extinguisher nearby at the refueling station. Moreover, anybody who is operating the fueling station must be trained and also needs to be trained to safely and effectively use the fire extinguisher. When it comes to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators utilizing a forklift must be correctly trained. This training includes a classroom portion as well as hands-on training. When completing the training session, the individual must be tested to be able to prove that they understand the training materials. A part of this training also includes the proper way of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also involves precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they could be driving as well as site-specific procedures.
Medical Treatment
There must be an MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheet center located within the facility where the forklift is operating. This center would include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents that are used on site. This will also cover the acid in the forklift battery, along with the propane that is used to refuel the unit.
MSDSs sheets need to be available for all workers all the time. If any exposure incident happens for example, the person needs to be evaluated at once. If any medical attention is required, to should be given without any delay. Generally, if you are uncertain if medical care is needed, as a general rule; have a doctor examine the injury if you truly believe it is severe. Better to be safe than sorry.
